Mr. Mkhuleko Hlengwa, appointed as the Deputy Minister of Transport on 3 July 2024, has had a distinguished political career marked by significant contributions to South Africa's legislative processes. Before this appointment, he served as the Chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA), a role that underscored his commitment to accountability and transparency in public finance.
Hlengwa’s political journey began early; he became a political activist at the age of 10 in 1997. His dedication to the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) quickly saw him rise to become the National Chairperson of the IFP Youth Brigade. His leadership qualities and passion for public service led to his election as a Member of the National Assembly in February 2012, making him one of the youngest parliamentarians at the time.
Upon his re-election in May 2014, Hlengwa was appointed to the SCOPA, where he played a pivotal role in overseeing government expenditures and ensuring financial integrity within public institutions. His expertise and leadership were further recognized in June 2019 when the African National Congress extended the SCOPA chairpersonship to the IFP, and Hlengwa was chosen to head the committee from July 2019.
In the 2024 General Elections, Hlengwa was re-elected to the National Assembly, solidifying his position as a key figure in South African politics, having been ranked third on the IFP’s national list. His appointment as Deputy Minister of Transport marks a new chapter in his career, where he is expected to bring his experience and dedication to the forefront of South Africa's transport sector.
