Traveling between Johannesburg and Musina is set to receive a significant boost with the upcoming rehabilitation of the Old N1 Highway leading to Beitbridge. This critical stretch of road has long served as a vital artery for both local and cross-border traffic, linking the economic hubs of South Africa with neighboring Zimbabwe. The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) has given the green light for the project, which is estimated to cost R227 million.
The rehabilitation will cover a 5.8 km section of the road, with work expected to enhance safety, reduce travel times, and support the region’s economic development. The project is not only about infrastructure but also about uplifting local communities. In line with SANRAL’s commitment to social and economic transformation, 8 percent of the project’s value will be invested in local labor from the Musina area. Additionally, 30 percent of the project budget will be allocated to targeted businesses, particularly those with 51 percent black ownership, ensuring broad-based economic participation.
The project also emphasizes inclusivity. Employment opportunities will be provided to youth, women, and people living with disabilities, reflecting the government’s broader goals of fostering economic equity. SANRAL’s emphasis on local labor and targeted enterprises is expected to create a significant number of jobs and stimulate economic activity in the region, leaving a lasting legacy of growth and empowerment.
Hillary Construction Pvt Ltd has been appointed as the main contractor for the project, bringing its extensive experience and expertise to the table. The company will be tasked with ensuring that the rehabilitation is completed to the highest standards, on time, and within budget.
The rehabilitation of the Old N1 Highway is part of a broader effort to improve South Africa's road infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient transport networks. As this crucial project moves forward, it promises to not only enhance connectivity between Johannesburg and Musina but also bring tangible benefits to the local communities along its route.
